Join us on December 7 from 6:45 to 8:15 at the Haw Creek Commons for a time of contemplative practice through shared silence, discussion, mindful movement and singing with live music. Each week there will be a brief presentation about how the practices you’re learning affect your brain. There will be audio and video materials available to support your practice.
The Contemplative Practices group is part of the larger “Haw Creek Commons” (HCC) project sponsored by the Missional Wisdom foundation, which is based in Dallas and has branches in Portland, OR, Wichita, KS and here in Asheville.
The aim is to make HCC a vibrant community center for the seven-thousand household Haw Creek Neighborhood of East Asheville. Among the projects HCC has begun or will start soon are sustainable gardening, beekeeping, coworking space, community commercial kitchen, studio art space, community wood working shop, retreat space, yoga/dance/exercise space, performance, gallery and event space and much more.
The overall goal is to bring a contemplative awareness to all activities. To contribute to that goal, the Contemplative Practices group will be offering an immersion in wide variety of contemplative practices, all grounded in the very new field of contemplative neuroscience.
Each week, in addition to singing with live music and mindful, meditative music, there will be short periods of silent contemplative practice, brief presentations of different ways the brain can be trained to make contemplative practice easier and more accessible, and contemplative dialogue. As the group progresses, we hope to develop what we’re calling “contemplative activism,” providing a resource for others to bring a more contemplative outlook to their activities, whether at work, school, in healing, and even in politics!
We are considering offering occasional “mini-retreats” – several hours on a Saturday morning or even a half day – on specific topics like mindful/contemplative eating and exercise, mindful/contemplative approaches to dealing with all kinds of physical pain, and whatever else folks are interested in exploring from a contemplative stance.
